there’s now a bit of a backlash. Instead you’re relying too heavily on rigid rules or shopworn distinctions that haven’t been thought through or that don’t serve you. Stereotypes about others are the most obvious type of autopilot rule, but beliefs about ourselves – “I’m not creative.” or “I’m too old to dance.” or “I am undeserving of love.” – are another example. \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EIt’s mindfulness that allows you to \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Cb\u003Enotice your feelings and thoughts rather than be entangled in them. \u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EWhen you’re mindful of your anger, you can observe it with greater sensitivity, focus, and emotional clarity, perhaps discovering where the anger is actually coming from. You might even discover that your “anger” is really sadness or fear.\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMindfulness guides us to become more emotionally agile by allowing us to observe the thinker having the thoughts.\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\u003C\u002Fblockquote\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ESimply paying attention brings the self out of the shadows. It \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Cb\u003Ecreates the space between thought and action \u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003Ethat we need to ensure we’re acting with volition, rather than simply out of habit. \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EEmotional agility means having any number of troubling thoughts or emotions \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Ci\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003Eand \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fi\u003E\u003Cb\u003Estill managing to act in a way that serves how you most want to live. \u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EThat’s what it means to\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Cb\u003E step out and off the Our goal is to deliver top-quality work to a client, so we admonish our staff when their product is subpar. We’re worried about a loved one’s smoking habit, so we reprimand them when we smell tobacco on their clothes. In the case of the executive, both his doctor and his wife pressured him to improve his health and both failed to spark change. Why? \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EBecause the values being pushed—abstract health benefits—weren’t his values. But the executive’s son recast the situation in a way that resonated deeply with his father. The “why” behind his goals were now clear.\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ERather than pressuring from the outside in, it’s more effective to cultivate change from the inside out. If you’re trying to encourage a shift in someone (or yourself), consider the values that they (or you) already hold. Here are a couple suggestions for how you might go about it.\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EConsider what the person’s values might be\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fli\u003E\n\u003Cli style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EThink of how you might frame the end goal in terms that align with these values. \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fli\u003E\n\u003Cli style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ENotice how the person is mentally framing the goal: Are they feeling defeated? Do they need encouragement? \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fli\u003E\n\u003Cli style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ERemember that change is a process, not an event, and you must be patient with both yourself and others in the face of any transition.
