This is one of the central ideas in my book \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Ci\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EEmotional Agility\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fi\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003E: the fact that the pace of the 21\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003Est\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003E century world requires us to be \u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003Ci\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003Eagile\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fi\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003E. \u003C\u002Fspan\u003EHowever, many organizations adhere to outdated and inaccurate perspectives on resilience that assume it is solely the responsibility of the individual.\u003Cb\u003E \u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cb\u003EInstead, organizations should be looking at organizational cultures, systems, and processes that may be negatively impacting the wellbeing of their people. \u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\u003C\u002Fblockquote\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cb\u003EThe line between “challenging, but manageable” and “completely untenable” can be a blurry one and varies from person to person.\u003C\u002Fb\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003E You may be ready to put in the extra hours leading up to a big deadline, but maintaining a crushing workload indefinitely would push you past the breaking point. You might appreciate direct feedback, even if it is uncomfortable at times, but there’s a difference between constructive criticism and an incivility.\u003C\u002Fspan\u003E\u003C\u002Fp\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003EIncreasing demands for flexible, hybrid schedules suggests that people are no longer willing to shoulder the burden of workplace expectations that don’t meet key human needs. The fact that these developments have taken many employers by surprise points toward the low value that our society has placed on emotional wellbeing. In the case of the executive, both his doctor and his wife pressured him to improve his health and both failed to spark change. If you’re trying to encourage a shift in someone (or yourself), consider the values that they (or you) already hold.
